Acteoside(Verbascoside) is a phenylpropanoid, reported as a chemical constituent from different plant species, and was isolated as a pure compound on RP-HPLC from the violet flowers of Syringa vulgaris. On pharmacological evaluation this compound exhibited a dose-dependent decrease in sytolic, diastolic and mean arterial blood pressure in normotensive pentothal anaesthetized rats. The median effective dose was 10 mg/kg and lasted for 2-3 min, whilst heart rate also decreased.
Acteoside(Verbascoside) demonstrated an inhibitory effect on protein kinase C (PKC) that could explain in part the antitumor activity measured in vitro. An antiproliferative effect on aortic smooth muscle could result in a preventive effect on arteriosclerosis.More generally, Acteoside showed various biological activities, from antibiotic and antifeedant to immunodepressive.
